ARTIST'S STATEMENT
I am a viewer. I find, quite possibly, entirely too many details to be delightful in everyday sights. This makes most commutes become thoroughly enjoyable, but also has the nasty habit of prolonging them. Perhaps I've yet to lose the sense of wonder I had as a child, but it's this fresh perspective that I aim to convey in my work. I'm no spearhead of the next art movement. I do not aim to shock or create a revolution through my artwork. I simply hope to direct the viewers' attention to a detail that I found joy in.
My style is anchored in the traditional forms, but kept fresh through my personal interests and cartoonish approach to rendering subjects. The subjects themselves are chosen by the details that catch my interest, or because of the story that they allude to. Whether it be the charming wrinkle in a shoe that adds an almost caricature quality, or the debate of why and how we use masks- there are personalities to be found in my subjects.
Whether or not the viewer discovers these personalities is left to their own sense of wonder, but my goal is to remind them of that ability to stop and look. This is no new or novel purpose, but as I've explained, that is not my intent. For those who are the leaders of art nouveau, the spearheads, they need us. They need a stable body of artists who have the strength and deep roots to propel their efforts forward. My work is a part of this grounded body, with a simple, honest intent.
